Salt Water Systems :These are becoming increasingly popular, and at Peverel Pools we are the most experienced installers of Salt Water Pools in Essex. In fact nearly all of the pools we have installed since we began are Salt water chlorinated . What are the advantages? The advantages of salt water chlorination fall into three categories:
Comfort:Many people immediately think of the sea when we mention salt water, this is a common misunderstanding. The sea is typically 3.5% salt, a salt water pool is usually 0.7% salt (A teardrop is 0.9% salt). This means that as the water in a salt pool is close to the concentration of salt naturally ocurring in the human body (0.9%) the eyes skin and hair are much less irritated by the water - you can feel the difference particularly when you open your eyes in the water - the lack of discomfort is a real surprise the first time it happens. Convenience:A salt water chlorinator generates chlorine from the salt all the time that the pool pump is running, which means that you do not have to worry about keeping the pool topped up with chlorine, you only need to test the water regularly and adjust the chlorinator setting accordingly. It also means that should you go on holiday you can be confident of returning to a crystal clear pool. Cost:Naturally as you are not regularly adding chlorine to the pool, your day to day costs will be lower, and as the chlorine reacts back to salt and recycles itself the environmental impact is reduced How does it work?As the water is circulated it passes over an electrolytic cell. A small electric current is passed between the metal plates of the cell, this causes chlorine gas to be given off and this is dissolved in the water at a high concentration. This chlorine dose very quickly neutralises any algae and bacteria in the water and then reacts back with the by-products produced in the chlorinator to form salt once again whereby the whole process repeats itself.
The whole process is controlled from a small box mounted in the plant room which draws very little current and costs almost nothing to run
Many pool companies will discourage salt water systems because of the corrosive nature of salt water. This is not a concern as long as all the components of the system are designed to cope with it. As a matter of routine all of our pools are equipped thus and there is little to worry about from the customer point of view. The biggest worry is that you will not be spending money on chlorine and that of course is not a worry for you but for the other pool companies.
